On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, we hear the story of the man born blind. There are many facets to this story, but we will focus on one. The people ask Jesus, “Who sinned for this man to be born this way?” And Jesus’ reply was this: “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

This satatement of Jesus give us much on which to mediatate. How many problems do we encounter in our lives? How many problems do we witness others encounter? Often, we hear people question, “Why had God allowed this to happen? Why do these people have to suffer? Why did this person have to die?”

Many of these questions cannot be answered by man. Many times we are called to trust. But we can always look to the statement of Jesus in answer to why the man was born blind. “It is so the works of God might be made visible through him.” We have heard the statement, “God can bring good out of every situation.” Do we believe? Have you ever seen something good come of a desperate situation? Have you ever witnessed the conversion of people after a tragedy? Let us trust God more fully. Let us witness to the fidelity of Jesus. Let us, like Jesus, be the light of the world.
