Today’s Reading

The Transfiguaration of Our Lord

Matthew 17:1-9

In the gospel reading for today, let us look at the disciples, Peter, James and John. They had to have been quite overcome by what transpired before their eyes. To witness Our Lord become dazzling in appearance and be speaking with Moses and Elijah would be quite overwhelming. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Peter had to be speaking out of nervousness, not knowing what to say or do. Would you have been like him? Or would you have been silent like James and John? And then they hear the Voice of the Father and they fall to the ground. They were terrified.
To put ourselves in this gospel story is a contemplation of human nature. People have not changed in 2000 years, have they?

Mission

We could find no better way to describe the purpose of Daily Beatitude than the Prologue of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Paragraph 1:

God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life.

We are called to live in beatitude. This contemplation is one designed to help us incorporate the beatitudes into our day. This work is not one of absolutes. It is just one way to incorporate the countenance of Jesus into each day. It is not the only way. View our rationale.
