The Transfiguaration of Our Lord
Matthew 17:1-9In the gospel reading for today, let us look at the disciples, Peter, James and John. They had to have been quite overcome by what transpired before their eyes. To witness Our Lord become dazzling in appearance and be speaking with Moses and Elijah would be quite overwhelming. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
Peter had to be speaking out of nervousness, not knowing what to say or do. Would you have been like him? Or would you have been silent like James and John? And then they hear the Voice of the Father and they fall to the ground. They were terrified.
To put ourselves in this gospel story is a contemplation of human nature. People have not changed in 2000 years, have they?
