Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 16:21-27In today’s gospel, Peter is rebuked because he corrects Jesus in saying Jesus should never suffer in His ministry. It is a lesson for us that being a disciple of Jesus comes with a cost. There is a ‘death to self’ that is necessary. The second part of the gospel refers to this. Jesus tells us “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?” (Mt 16:24-26).
Are you willing to suffer for Jesus? It is something we must all consider.
