Today’s Reading

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

John 6:1-15

The gospel reading for today is the feeding of the five thousand. In those days, they only counted men. So the number was probably closer to 15-20 thousand. That is such an incredible feat it is even hard to imagine. We have heard the story so many times, we just listen and dismiss it. But to actually feed 15-20 thousand people, would have to be a miracle! And with just 5 loaves and 2 fish given from the generosity of one young boy. One has to wonder at the thoughts that went through the little boy’s mind!
Another question that may arise is what the people thought of Jesus. it says in the gospel they said, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” Would you think of that miracle as coming from a prophet? Maybe the key word is “the.” Jesus is “The” prophet who was to come into the world.

We could find no better way to describe the purpose of Daily Beatitude than the Prologue of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Paragraph 1:

God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life.

We are called to live in beatitude. This contemplation is one designed to help us incorporate the beatitudes into our day. This work is not one of absolutes. It is just one way to incorporate the countenance of Jesus into each day. It is not the only way. View our rationale.
