Blessed Are They Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness, for they shall be satisfied
Matthew 20:1-16Today’s gospel is the story of the landowner who went out to hire workers for his vineyard. He went out at various times of the day and hired workers. When it came time to be paid, he paid them all the same wage. Those hired in the morning were indignant that they did not receive more than those who came at the end of the day. The landowner said, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? [Or] am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?”
Reflect on this gospel along with today’s beatitude. Do we hunger for righteousness that is righteous according to our own standards? Maybe we should consider what God considers righteous.
As the beatitude says, if it is truly righteous, “(You) will be satisfied.”
