Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 14:1, 7-14Today’s gospel reading begins with a statement from the beginning of Chapter 14 of Luke: “One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.”
The rest of the gospel is taken from later in the chapter, verses 7-14. It is beautiful to see the wisdom of Mother Church in the selection of the readings that this one verse would preceed this gospel story. The rest of the gospel recounts the teaching of “places of honor” at a banquet and who you invite to the luncheons and dinners you host. Jesus was under such close scrutiny himself and he teaches a parable of humility. How often do we do the same to others?
Jesus, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
