Twenty-Fifith Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 20:1-16Today's gospel is a difficult one to swallow. Jesus tells the parable of the workers who come to work for the daily wage. Some are hired first in the morning. And then others throughout the day until the last are hired shortly before quitting time.
As they are called to recieve their wages, the last hired recieve the same as the first who worked all day. There is grumbling and anger.
How would you feel?
Jesus relates that the owner said this: "My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?"
We must be careful not to judge, evaluate, compare. Hold fast to Jesus. Keep your eyes on Him.
